Born in Birtley in 1887, he joined 10 DLI, as a Private, in 1914. In August 1917, whilst attached to the 43 Machine Gun Company, he was awarded the Military Medal for his bravery during an attack on Inverness Copse, Ypres - "Although severely wounded in the advance, he continued with the machine gun team until the objective was reached and reinforcements arrived ". John Bloomfield was presented with his Military Medal, whilst recovering from his wounds, in a hospital at Blackpool. He died in 1979.
